“Comparative Effectiveness of Mobile Health Smoking Cessation Approaches among Underserved Patients in Primary Care ” PCS-2021C1-22391

Study Overview

A closeup photograph of a person's hands holding a smartphone as they navigate the Promote UP iCanQuit+ Motiv8 intervention arm.Promote UP is a 5-year research project funded by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) exploring the comparative effectiveness of mobile health (mHealth) smoking quit aids and the Florida Quitline referral system.

Tobacco smoking is the leading cause of preventable, disease, disability, and death in the United States, with smoking rates higher among socially vulnerable populations. mHealth smartphone application show the potential to increase access to quit aids, but, as noted in the 2020 Surgeon General’s report on smoking cessation, there is an evidence gap in the comparative effectiveness of mHealth cessation interventions in relation to other methods such as quitlines.

Under the leadership of Principal Investigators Jesse Dallery, PhD, and Ramzi Salloum, PhD, researchers on our team intend to help fill this gap by studying how effective two evidence-based smartphone applications, iCanQuit and iCanQuit+Motiv8, are at helping people quit and maintain abstinence from smoking in comparison to each other and the current standard of care in Florida, referral to the Bureau of Tobacco Free Florida Quitline.

Specific Aims

  1. Evaluate the comparative effectiveness of iCanQuit alone, iCanQuit+Motiv8, and the Florida Quitline referral system in a pragmatic trial of primary care patients (n=1,332).
  2. Assess how and for whom the interventions help patients in achieving smoking abstinence.
  3. Identify barriers and facilitators to implementing the interventions in clinical practice.

Trial Interventions

The Promote UP study will evaluate the comparative effectiveness of three evidence-based smoking quit aids in a pragmatic trial of primary care patients: two mobile health (mHealth) applications, iCanQuit+ and iCanQuit + Motiv8, and the Florida Quitline referral system.

iCanQuit+

iCanQuit+ is a smoking cessation smartphone application developed by Co-Investigator Dr. Jonathan Bricker that uses the ACT behavior change model.

Bureau of Tobacco Free Florida Phone Quit Program

The third intervention arm is the current standard of care in Florida, referral to the Bureau of Tobacco Free Florida (BTFF) Phone Quit program. The Phone Quit program provides free, 24/7 over-the-phone counseling (in English or Spanish) with a trained Quit Coach who helps individuals assess their addiction and create a quit plan. Individuals also receive three free proactive coaching sessions, two weeks of free nicotine replacement therapy, and access to web- and text-based resources and tools.
